Description

The Pacific Solutions to Save Our Ocean – Integrated Ocean Management Programme aims to leverage the spate of national ocean policies (NOPs) launched in the Pacific in recent years to address the need for greater integrated ocean management (IOM). This programme is endorsed by the Ocean Decade and seeks to increase scientific capacity and create opportunities for ocean science to feed into decision making.

Main Objective:

  • Harnessing science and knowledge (including traditional knowledge) for integrated ocean management

Key results area:

     1. Develop robust legal and governance frameworks to implement national ocean policy.

  1. Improve decision support systems so that policies are informed by science.

  1. Integrate Pacific traditional knowledge, culture, and wisdom to support inclusive, consultative decision-making and improve decision support systems.

As custodians of the world's largest marine ecosystems, the Blue Pacific Continent, SPC and its island members seek to save our Ocean and provide solutions to some of our existential challenges including climate change.

The inception phase of the Pacific Solutions IOM programme is currently underway with the support of the New Zealand Government and the European Union. The inception phase of the Pacific Solutions IOM Programme seeks, in 3 years, to build the foundations for sustainable integrated ocean management in the Pacific.

PCCOS will target and support the countries that have started implementing their policy framework for Integrated Ocean Management and will help them emerge as champions or role-models for IOM in the Pacific. It will also create a favourable regional dynamic to IOM implementation, mobilising Pacific countries that do not have a National Ocean Policy yet and Pacific oversee territories in its regional dynamic.

This 10-year programme aims at improving the capacity of PICTs to harness science and knowledge to inform and implement integrated ocean management across the Blue Pacific.

The Pacific Solutions IOM programme oversees several project contributing to IOM in the Pacific. It includes the PacPATH project (IRD), the Pacific Coral Reef Action and Knowledge project (SPREP), and the Threatened and migratory marine species science project (SPREP).
